Anna's Saga

There has been much said and re-said about a man hailing from a small township in the state of Maharashtra who shook the nation with his unprecedented determination to push for a legislative reform. An attempt that involved almost every fragment of the Indian Society.
With numerous examples to state, there have been umpteen hunger strikes, peaceful processions and agitations against the ruling class and/or its agencies. It is rather pertinent to ponder what made this one so special.
Allow me have a few thoughts stated right below.
Undeniably, the Commonwealth Games Fiasco (CWG) and the 2 Generation Mobile Technology (2G) caused widespread discontent and shame to the public. The question remains, in a nation with a less than average voter turnout clearly implying the lack of concern of executive affairs of the government, Was the back ground of the CWG and 2G enough to invoke the sentiment ? There was the adarsh misappropriation, the fodder scam, the cricket fixing issue to name a few. Why now ? Monetarily, these might have caused more damage than the rest but again since when do we pay heed to mere numbers.
In my humbled opinion, we the people of India are governed by this wonderful, unwarranted and unpredictable phenomenon called "Emotion".  Once triggered, can make us work wonders.  A splendid blend of emotions just about makes the cut for us.
The idea of an old man giving up food for the country, the ordeal of getting chores done at the government office and the platform to be the second largest voluntary gathering (assuming) after the freedom struggle does tickle many.
As noble as the gesture maybe, there still remains a slip between the cup and the lip. It was promulgated that the educated class was an integral part of this attempt for legislative reform. With all due respect, the lack of adequate and basic knowledge about one's cause in the generic mass was quite heartening.
The Media did take the meaning of being the fourth pillar of our democracy to the hilt. With clear aspersions and blocs within the media, this was nothing less than excellent infotainment.
Legally, Constitutionally and Logically, I among others might have some queries on the content of the legislation. It is not about undermining the law, it is about due process of the law and certain checks and balances that are essential to a democratic governments' smooth function.
Lastly, with immense pride to see enthusiastic personnel of our nation to take a stand and raise a unified voice,  i leave you with a simple yet soulful quote which my most beloved teacher in school once taught me.
"It might take two wings to fly but a very hungry stomach to even attempt to do".
